Please join us for the 2012 Annual Meeting and Awards for Excellence hosted by the Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library and Museum at the Henry A. Wallace Visitor & Education Center in picturesque Hyde Park, New York.
The conference theme will explore how organizations can exhibit their collections in new educational and interpretive ways; the steps some museums are taking to attract and engage a more diverse mix of visitors by using their permanent collections more creatively; and show how museums can continue to serve their entire community and make history a more meaningful presence in people's daily lives. The Annual Meeting will feature keynote speakers, break-out presentations by your peers, "behind-the-scenes" tours of the of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum and the Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites, breakfast, luncheon, networking reception, the Awards for Excellence ceremony, and more! 2012 Awards for Excellence are presented to:
Gracie Mansion Conservancy
New York City (New York). For the publication of Gracie Mansion: A Student Guide to the People’s House. This award is in recognition of the take-away Student Tour Booklet which serves to reinforce the information and concepts that are the focus of student tours of the historic house, thus continuing student engagement with the house and its history subsequent to a tour.
Historic Huguenot Street
New Paltz (Ulster County). For the public program and historic preservation involved in the restoration and reinterpretation of the Abraham Hasbrouck House. This award is in recognition of the important restoration to revive its colonial period history – one that advances our understanding of life in New Paltz focusing on the mid 18th century.
Mount Gulian Historic Site
Beacon (Dutchess). For the public program “On the Side of Angels”. This award is in recognition of the excellent use of primary source materials to develop a thought provoking and engaging program which explores the intertwined lives of young Robert Newlin Verplanck, and James F. Brown, an escaped slave and long-time Verplanck employee.
Newburgh Preservation Association
Newburgh (Orange). For the community collaboration and public program of the Dutch Reform Church in recognition of its “Community Gardens Project “ which is an effort to create greater awareness of the Dutch Reform Church and is a commitment to the broader community by donating the food grown in the gardens to local food pantries. The Community Gardens Project shows a creative way that a historic site can continue to benefit the present needs of a community while the building undergoes renovation.
New-York Historical Society
New York City (New York). For the regional history advancement and the use of new technologies at the renovated New-York Historical Society. This award is in recognition of the interactive installations in the new Robert H. and Clarice Smith New Gallery of American History and the DiMenna Children’s History Museum; the multimedia film experience “New York Story”; the NYHS website relaunch; and the mobile ‘app’ for the Smith Gallery.
Southold Historical Society
Southold (Suffolk). For the publication of Munnawhatteaug: The Last Days of the Menhaden Industry on Long Island by Geoffrey K. Fleming and Amy Kasuga Folk. This award is in recognition of the documentation of the menhaden (commonly known as ‘bunker’) fishing industry, its local impact and the inner workings of a now vanished way of life.
Southold Historical Society
Southold (Suffolk). For the publication of The Versatile Reverend: The Photographs of Loren A. Rowley by Geoffrey K. Fleming. This award is in recognition of the well researched and produced book which introduces readers to the Rev. Loren Rowley and his images of everyday life on the North Fork of Long Island during the late 19th/early 20th centuries.

Southold (Suffolk). For the publication of Charles Henry Miller, N.A.: Painter of Long Island by Geoffrey K. Fleming and Ruth Ann Bramson. This award
is in recognition of the well researched and produced book that provides a complete look at the life and career of one of Long Island’s most
important artists.

Albany (Albany County). For the publication of Episodes from a Hudson River Town: New Baltimore, NY by Clesson S. Bush. This award is in
recognition of the excellent use of varied primary source materials to provide an authentic portrait of a small town community, making small town life on the Hudson River come alive.

Albany (Albany County). For the publication of Environmental History of the Hudson River: Human Uses that Changed the Ecology, Ecology that
Changed Human Uses edited by Robert Henshaw. This award is in recognition of the comprehensive examination of the human use/ecological response feedback relationship with the Hudson River.
Westchester County Historical Society
Elmsford (Westchester). For the publication and regional history advancement in the three volume work, The Cemeteries of Westchester County by Patrick Raftery. This award is in recognition of a well researched and produced book that not only details the histories of Westchester’s cemeteries, but also tells many interesting stories of the inhabitants of the cemeteries as well.
