Coordinated by GHHN, MidHudson History Day is the regional contest for National History Day (NHD), a program that provides over half a million students each year the opportunity to excel at historical research, interpretation and creative expression. To learn more about National History Day and how it transforms young minds, click here. The theme for the 2023-2024 school year is Turning Points in History.
Students compete at two division levels: Junior (students in grades 6-8) and Senior (students in grades 9-12). Students create entries and compete in one of five categories: Historical Papers, Individual and Group Exhibits, Individual and Group Performances, Individual and Group Documentaries, and Individual and Group Websites. Students wishing to compete in MidHudson History Day in 2024 must attend school in Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster counties or, if homeschooled, must reside in one of those four counties. All categories allow individual or group (up to five students) entries, with the exception of the paper category which only allows individual entries. Each school may promote three projects per category per division (including three group and three individual entries in the same category). Teachers must register online before any of their students can do so for this contest. Registration takes place online - click the button below to register. Following the MidHudson History Day Contest in March, top entries will be invited to advance to state and national contests (held in April and June, respectively). |

CALL FOR JUDGES AND VOLUNTEERS!
Serving as a judge or volunteer for our MidHudson regional contest or at the New York State History Day contest is a wonderful way to become involved with the History Day program! Your work as a judge will have a direct impact on students who seek thoughtful, helpful feedback on their projects that will serve them whether or not they move on to the next tier of the contest. Students rely on judges to evaluate their projects and help them to improve their skills that they have developed throughout the process.
While most judges include teachers, librarians, and museum professionals, anyone who wants to support students in this exciting learning experience may judge. You can play an important role by volunteering as a History Day judge – reviewing student projects, interviewing contestants, selecting the winners to advance to the national contest, and providing constructive feedback and encouragement. We are looking for judges who have an interest and knowledge of history, a basic comfort level with technology, and a desire to work with students. Judges and Volunteers will need to be available to attend the in-person contest in March of 2024. For more information on being a judge, click here to visit our FAQ page.
Interested in helping but not as a judge? We are also looking for volunteers to help the Contest day run smoothly! Volunteers will help with many tasks the day of the Contest, including check-in, room assignments, and at the Awards Ceremony.
If you'd like to become a judge or volunteer for the MidHudson contest, please click here to register. Click on 'create account' in the top menu bar, then select 'judge' or 'volunteer' in the drop-down menu. From there, you will be directed to create a user name and password.
