Handling History: Collections Care Training Practica
Collections care depends on a continuing awareness of the condition
and environment of the paintings, documents, photographs, textiles and furniture, which make up the core of our region's unique history. Handling History collections involves the development of observational
skills, environmental awareness and monitoring, and establishing a pattern of regular attention, review and reporting. This training series aims to help
museum personnel develop a sense of conservation judgment and encourages the appropriate use of professional conservation assistance by collecting organizations.
Each practicum is geared specifically for stewards of cultural property: paid and
volunteer museum, library and historical society personnel who are responsible for the collections. Prior professional training in conservation and museum handling methods is not required.
The Conservation Treatment Grant Program
The Conservation Treatment Grant Program, administered by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network (GHHN), in association with the Museum Program of the New York State Council on the Arts
(NYSCA), provides support for treatment procedures to aid in stabilizing and preserving objects in collections of museums, historical and cultural organizations in New York State. The work must be performed by, or
under the direct supervision of, a professional conservator. Click here for more information.
